Angela Simmons, Ed.D.
Assistant Vice President
Dr. Angela Simmons, a self-described military brat, has lived both in the US and abroad, but calls Mississippi home. As a first-generation college student, Angela feels lucky to work in student affairs because it provides an opportunity to support students as they learn about self and others. Angela was drawn to working in the Division of Student Affairs at Virginia Tech because of the Aspirations for Student Learning and the opportunity to work alongside her colleagues as they create co-curricular and extracurricular programs that help students embrace Ut Prosim as a way of life. It is her belief that the true goal of an education is to teach students to think critically, care deeply, and work with others to meet societal needs.
In her role as Assistant Vice President for Student Affairs, Angela works with the directors in Cultural and Community Centers, the Leadership Education Collaborative, New Student Programs, Student Engagement and Campus Life, and VT Engage to create unique and vibrant programs and educational opportunities that support student life outside the classroom. From new student orientation to cultural commencement ceremonies, Angela works with dedicated people who are committed to supporting student engagement.
Prior to her current role, Angela served as Director of Student Conduct at Virginia Tech. Before coming to the university, she was Director of the Center for Student Involvement at Millersville University in Pennsylvania and Assistant Dean and Director of Greek Life at Florida State University. Angela has a bachelor’s degree in educational psychology and a master’s degree in counselor education with a concentration in student affairs, both from Mississippi State University. She often uses her listening skills with students and staff and is suspected of knowing Jedi mind tricks. Angela has a doctorate in higher education from Florida State University, and enthusiastically cheers for both the Hokies and the ‘Noles at athletic events. In her spare time, Angela can be found reading a book, sitting on a beach, or Googling to support her curiosity habit.
