Lee Hawthorne, Ph.D.
Chief of Staff
Dr. Lee Hawthorne joined the Virginia Tech community in the summer of 2016 as Chief of Staff for the Vice President for Student Affairs. Lee was drawn to Student Affairs at Virginia Tech because of the genuine care for the success of our students, the deep commitment to the Aspirations for Student Learning, and the energetic and passionate faculty and staff in the division. Lee earned her bachelor’s degree from a women’s college and was a very involved undergraduate student. When she discovered student affairs as a profession, she was hooked! Lee has worked in higher education for almost 25 years in a variety of areas, including: admissions, student life, leadership programs, diversity and inclusion, residence life, fraternity and sorority life, and orientation. Lee loves her work and says it doesn’t get any better than working on a college campus with so many bright, inquiring minds.
Inspired by the Aspirations for Student Learning and describing herself as a lifelong learner, Lee welcomes the opportunity to learn with and from students. Serving as Chief of Staff, Lee provides direct assistance to the Vice President for Student Affairs and management oversight for the operation of the Vice President for Student Affairs’ office. She manages special projects, coordinates meetings of a Board of Visitors committee, and is part of the leadership of the division. Lee is also active in ACPA – College Educators International and was named a Diamond Honoree by the association.
Lee grew up in coastal North Carolina and is a true Carolina girl who loves sweet tea and hot summers. While she loves the beach, the mountain life of Blacksburg has offered many new opportunities for her. Since moving to Blacksburg, she has been trying her hand at river kayaking, hiking, gardening, and even fly-fishing.
