Robin Jones, Ed.D.

Executive Director of Planning and Resource Management

Dr. Robin Jones joined the Virginia Tech community in the summer of 2016 as Executive Director of Planning and Resource Management. She felt called to the field of student affairs as an undergraduate student after assuming leadership roles in student organizations, residence life, and student government and while working on campus in the student union and alumni office. She says it felt like she was majoring in student affairs anyway, so why not pursue it as a career! In her more than 20-year career, she has worked in the areas of academic advising, student life and leadership, recreation and wellness, diversity and inclusion, student conduct, Title IX, enrollment management, and assessment. In her current position, her work, strengths, and interests have all aligned so that she can focus on division-wide learning and operations and helping all Division of Student Affairs departments fulfill the division’s mission through planning and data-informed decision-making, employee and organizational development, and fiscal management.

When asked what she loves most about Virginia Tech, Robin says, “It’s the people and their commitment to Ut Prosim.” Having served in an active duty military family all her adult life, service is second nature. She moved all over the country as part of both the U.S. Army and U.S. Coast Guard communities, and Virginia Tech felt like a place where she could extend this connection through the Corps of Cadets and the extensive retired military network in the area. Perhaps this is why the tactical, operational, and strategic come so naturally to her! When her husband retired from the military, Blacksburg was the first place they moved that wasn’t “chosen” for them. She’s grateful to be in the mountains and in close proximity to extended family.

Robin grew up in Marietta, Georgia, and earned her bachelor’s degree from the University of North Georgia. She has advanced degrees from the University of Central Texas and Georgia Southern University and completed an Ed.D. in higher education administration in 2011 from the University of Alabama. She is also an active member of NASPA—Student Affairs Administrators in Higher Education. When not at work, you can find Robin training for a half marathon or just getting in a few miles, enjoying the outdoors with her husband and daughters, or traveling to stay connected with longtime friends.
